Afghanistan: Currency-Woman and the Global Moral Market
(Berenice Bento,in:Gender, Justice and Legal Feminism ((GJLF,volume 1))
The invasion of Afghanistan by the United States and NATO ushered in new global rhetoric of the power of the great powers. Never had the situation of women been triggered to justify occupation policies. This chapter aims to propose an interpretation of this rhetorical resource locating it not as something isolated or punctual, but as a new discursive configuration that is based on the instrumentalization of feminist struggles, which I will call the invention of the “currency-woman”. The circulation of discourses in defense of women’s rights became a global moral currency. The chapter will use interviews, essays, and books mainly from Afghan thinkers as a source of analysis.
